The snake (or serpent) is one of the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols, spanning cultures across the globe. Often representing fertility, renewal and rebirth because of the continual shedding of their skin. Serpents are also symbols of protection and gaurdianship as seen in tradional "Naga Buddha" imagery where Buddha sits, protected by a great multi-headed cobra. "Naga" is the Sanskrit word for a deity taking the form of a great snake in both Hinduism and Buddhism.
